MCPEAK/RENO CAPTURE MCI OPEN AT DEERFIELD BEACH IN EVIAN WOMEN'S BEACH TOUR

Deerfield Beach, Fla. - Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno used two scoring spurts in the championship match to propell the top-seeded team to a 15-8 win over Liz masakayan and Angela Rock to capture the $50,000 MCI Open at Deerfield Beach here Sunday.

The world's No. 1-ranked team, McPeak and Reno split the $10,875 first-place prize in capturing their second-straight title on the 1996 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. Masakayan and Rock shared $8,175 for second.

The MCI Open at Deerfield Beach presented by Nissan was the first outdoor event of the 1996 season and third of 16 stops on the Evian Tour as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association opens its 10th season of operation.

Following two FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series events in mid-April in Brazil, the Evian Tour resumes competition April 27-28 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, for the $50,000 Coors Light Beach Volley '96.

Trailing 5-2 in the championship match, McPeak and Reno scored seven- straight points to take a 9-5 lead. The second-seeded Masakayan and Rock cut the margin to 10-8 before McPeak and Reno closed out the scoring with five straight points.

McPeak and Reno advanced to the championship match with a 15-11 win over sixth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop, while Masakayan and Rock scored a 15-8 semi-final win over seventh-seeded Lisa Arce and Patty Dodd.

Arce and Dodd, who upset fourth-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Christine Schaefer 17-15 Saturday to advance to Sunday's play, captured the $5,725 third-place prize with a 15-11 win over Roque and Shupryt-Knoop.

The Evian Tour event was also the first of five 1996 events to be covered by ABC Sports as the major network provided same-day coverage of the Deerfield Beach finale.

TOP SEEDS LEAD FINAL FOUR TEAMS IN EVIAN WOMEN'S BEACH TOUR

DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA. - The top-seeded tandems of Holly McPeak/Nancy Reno and Liz Masakayan/Angela Rock scored "close" wins here Saturday to lead the final four teams into Sunday's final rounds of the MCI Open at Deerfield Beach.

Play concludes Sunday with four teams vying for the $10,875 first-place prize. The Olympic Crossing semi-finals will be played at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday. The MCI Open finals are at 1 p.m. followed by the third-place match.

The MCI Open at Deerfield Beach presented by Nissan is the first outdoor event of the 1996 season and third of 16 stops on the Evian Tour as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association opens its 10th season of operation.

The Evian Tour event will also be the first of five 1996 events covered by ABC Sports as the major network will provide same-day coverage of the Deerfield Beach finale from 3-4 p.m. (EST) Sunday. Mark Jones and Maria Barnes will provide the commentary.

McPeak and Reno, the world's No. 1-ranked team and the top-seeded tandem on the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour scored two wins Saturday, including a come-from-behind 15-12 win over fourth-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Christine Schaefer in the championship bracket's semi-finals.

Second-seeded Masakayan and Rock also scored two wins Saturday, including a 17-15 win over third-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley. In three meetings this season between the two teams, Masakayan and Rock have scored 16-14, 16-14 and 17-15 wins over Fontana Harris and Hanley.

McPeak and Reno face sixth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop in Sunday's first semi-final. Roque and Shupryt-Knoop had to win five matches Saturday, including a 16-14 upset win over Fontana Harris and Hanley.

Masakayan and Rock face seventh-seeded Lisa Arce and Patty Dodd in Sunday's other semi-final match. Arce and Dodd upset fourth-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Christine Schaefer 17-15 to advance.

BRAGADO\POPPINGA SCORE UPSET TO ADVANCE IN EVIAN WOMEN'S BEACH TOUR

DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA. - Danalee Bragado and Karrie Poppinga scored Friday's biggest upset as the 11th-seeded women's beach volleyball team advanced to the championship quarter-finals of the MCI Open at Deerfield Beach.

Bragado and Poppinga scored nine-straight points to turn a 6-2 deficit into an 11-6 lead over sixth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop enroute to a 15-10 win.

Led by the world's No. 1-ranked women's beach team of Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno, seven of the top eight seeded teams advanced here Friday after the opening two rounds of the MCI Open at Deerfield Beach.

Play continues at 9 a.m. Saturday with four teams advancing to Olympic Crossing semi-finals Sunday. The semi-final matches will be played at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday with the finals at 1 p.m. followed by the third- place match.

McPeak and Reno, who won nine events on the 1995 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, advanced to Saturday's quarter-finals with a 15-4 win over 32nd-seeded Tammy Paiement and Lynda Street and a 15-2 win over 16th- seeded Jennifer Meredith and Monique Oliver.

Seeded first in the MCI Open, McPeak and Reno face eighth-seeded Marla O'Hara and Ali Wood in Saturday's first quarter-final match. Fourth- seeded Karolyn Kirby and Christine Schaefer play fifth-seeded Gail Castro and Deb Richardson while Bragado and Poppinga challenge third-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley. Second-seeded Liz Masakayan and Angela Rock face seventh-seeded Lisa Arce and Patty Dodd in the final championship quarter-final match.

41 EVIAN TOUR TANDEMS ENTER MCI OPEN AT DEERFIELD BEACH

DEERFIELD BEACH, FLA. - Led by top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno, 41 teams have entered this weekend's $50,000 MCI Open at Deerfield Beach as the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour returns to the Gold Coast for the third-straight season.

The event will be the first outdoor event of the 1996 season and third of 16 stops on the Evian Tour as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association opens its 10th season of operation.

Five volleyball courts have been formed by the WPVA's Operations staff on the beach just north of the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier (NE 2nd St.). The Evian Tour event is being held in conjunction with the City of Deerfield Beach (John Melnicoff, 305/480-4423).

The Evian Tour event will also be the first of five 1996 events covered by ABC Sports as the major network will provide same-day coverage of the Deerfield Beach finale from 3-4 p.m. (EST) Sunday. Mark Jones and Maria Barnes will provide the commentary.

The three-day double-elimination tournament features a 32-team main draw with a 13-team, nine-match qualifier starting at 9 a.m. Friday. Four tandems will qualify as the final four seeds in the main draw. The first-two rounds of the championship bracket will be played Friday starting at 1 p.m.

Play continues at 9 a.m. Saturday with four teams advancing to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals Sunday. The semi-final matches will be played at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday 7 with the finals at 1 p.m. followed by the third-place match. Sunday's winner's will split $10,875 while the second-place finishers will share $8,175.

Presented by Nissan, the MCI Open at Deerfield Beach will be the first of five-straight events for the top players on the Evian Tour. The "string" includes three domestic tournaments and two international stops as the WPVA players prepare for June's United States Olympic Trials.

Sixteen teams will vie in the inaugural beach volleyball "gold medal" competition at the Atlanta Olympic Games as Evian Tour tandems will fill three spots in the olympic field. McPeak and Reno are currently ranked as the No. 1 team on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series circuit and have qualified as the top United States olympic beach team.

Two more teams to be determined at the United States Olympic Trials June 4-9 at the Harborview Complex in Baltimore, Md. The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games' beach volleyball competition with be July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.

Following this weekend's MCI Open at Deerfield Beach event, McPeak and Reno will be joined by other top Evian Tour teams for international stops in Brazil (Apr. 12-14 in Maceio and Apr. 19-21 in Recife).

The Evian Tour resumes competition in Carolina, Puerto Rico Apr. 27-28 and Hermosa Beach, Calif. May 3-5 before taking a weekend off. Following the Hermosa Beach event, the top Evian Tour must finalize their Olympic Trials partnerships May 6 to USA Volleyball. Since April, 1995, McPeak and Reno dominated both domestic and international competition by winning 15 of 24 events to share $229,080 in earnings. McPeak and Reno, who finished third in the 1995 MCI Open at Deerfield Beach, also posted five seconds, three thirds and a fourth. The McPeak/Reno tandem has won 88.2 percent of their matches in 1995 (127-17). In 16 Evian Tour events, McPeak and Reno shared $155,080 with nine firsts, five seconds and two thirds with a 76-11 match mark.

The 1996 Evian Tour season opened with February indoor events in Fairfax, Va., and New York. Karolyn Kirby and Christine Schaefer scored upset wins over McPeak and Reno (15-13) and Liz Masakayan and Angela Rock (15-4) to win the Fairfax event.

McPeak and Reno rebounded in New York by defeating Kirby and Schaefer (15-8) before capturing the record $31,500 first-place prize by downing Masakayan and Rock 15-13 in the finals.

Led Kirby, nine players are starting their 10th-season on the Evian Tour. Kirby is the winningest player with 56 career titles enroute to 511 career match wins and $375,329.13 in earnings.

Other 10-season veterans opening play in Deerfield Beach are Jackie Campbell, Gail Castro (three event titles, $178,493.63), Lori Forsythe (seven titles, $188,599.88), Lucy Han, Janice Harrer (12 titles, $168,470.25), Charlotte Roach, Elaine Roque (three titles, $201,342.21) and Gayle Stammer (one title).

Forsythe, who won last year's MCI Open at Deerfield Beach with Fontana Harris, will miss most of the 1996 season as she is expecting her first child this summer. The 1995 MCI Open winners had two win five matches on the final day to capture the title as Fontana Harris and Forsythe defeated Hanley and Rock 15-13 in the championship match. Deerfield Beach will be the eighth WPVA event in Florida. Here are final four results from the past Florida stops:
