PIRES/SILVA WIN FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL EVENT AS BRAZIL SWEEPS

MACEIO, BRAZIL - Brazil produced a sweep of the medals here Sunday as second-seeded Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva scored a 12-6 and 12-11 win over fellow country women Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel in the championship match of the first FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series event of the 1996 season.

Pires and Silva, who advanced to the finals with a 15-10 win over ninth-seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar of Brazil Saturday, won the $16,000 first-place prize by avenging an earlier 15-4 loss to the sixth-seeded Rodrigues and Samuel Friday.

Rodrigues and Samuel, who advanced to the finals Saturday with a 15-12 win over seventh-seeded Beate Buhler and Danja Musch of Germany, shared $10,400 for finishing second. Both the tandems of Pires/Silva and Rodrigues/Samuel will represent Brazil in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

In the third-place match, Bede and Behar defeated Buhler and Musch 15-10 as the Brazilians split $6,400 for third while Buhler and Musch, who will represent Germany in the Atlanta Olympic Games, shared $4,800 for fourth.

The gold, silver and bronze medal sweep by the Brazilians marked the first time in FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship- Series history that a country has claimed the top three places at an international stop.

For the first-time in 22 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship- Series events, the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour from the United States did not have a team in the final four of an international event.

With the sweep, Brazil has now claimed 31 medals in 22 FIVB Women's events since the start of the series in August, 1992. Brazil has won seven events while placing second 12 times and third 12 times. The United States has 33 medals (15 golds, nine silver and nine bronze) with Australia (one silver) and Germany (one bronze) one medal each.

Top seeded Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Nancy Reno (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), the No. 1-ranked team on the Evian Tour, finished fifth in the competition for the United States to split $3,600. McPeak and Reno were eliminated Friday by Pires and Silva 15-11.

Third-seeded Karolyn Kirby (Brookline, Mass./San Diego) and Angela Rock (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished seventh in the international stop to share $2,400 as the pair was eliminated 15-11 Friday by Buhler and Musch.

Fifth-seeded Barbara Fontana Harris (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Linda Hanley (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) from the Evian Tour finished 13th to split $1,600 after losing 15-7 to 20th-seeded Renata Costa and Roseli Timm of Brazil Friday.

Karrie Poppinga (Mililani, Hi.) and Christine Schaefer (Florence, Ky./San Diego) finished 17th to split $1,200 after the 22nd-seeded pair dropped a 15-10 elimination match to 12th-seeded Merita Bernsten and Ragni Hestad of Norway.

Overall, the four Evian Tour teams posted a 7-8 mark, including 2-0 against Italy, 1-0 versus Australia, 1-0 versus Canada, 3-6 against Brazil, 0-1 versus Germany and 0-1 versus Norway. McPeak and Reno have qualified for the Atlanta Olympic Games as the top USA team.

The FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series continues next week in Recife, Brazil (Apr. 17-21) with four Evian Tour teams competing for the United States, including McPeak/Reno, Fontana Harris/Kirby, Liz Masakayan/Rock and Poppinga/Schaefer.

Following the two Brazil events, the international series halts play for two months before resuming action June 21-23 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., for a combined men's and women's events.

A total of 16 teams will compete in the women's Olympic competition with the final two spots being determined June 4-9 in the United States Olympic Beach Trials in Baltimore, Md.Fourteen of the women's teams entered in the Maceio event will compete July 23-28 in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.

EVIAN TOUR RESUMES

Following next week's FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series event in Recife, Brazil, the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour resumes competition Apr. 27-28 in Carolina, P. R., for the $50,000 Coors Light Beach Volley '96. The event is the fourth of 16 stops on the 1996 Evian Tour as the domestic tour heads west for May events in Hermosa Beach, Calif. (3-5), San Diego (18-19) and Austin, Tex. (31-June 2).

BRAZILIANS BATTLE FOR FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL TITLE

MACEIO, BRAZIL - It will be an all-Brazil final as second-seeded Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva seek revenge against sixth-seeded Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel in the championship match here Sunday of the first FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series event of the 1996 season.

Pires and Silva advanced to the finals with a 15-10 win over ninth- seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar of Brazil while Rodrigues and Samuel downed seventh-seeded Beate Buhler and Danja Musch of Germany in action Saturday.

For the first-time in 22 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship- Series events, the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour did not have a team in the final four following play Friday.

Sunday's championship team will split the $16,000 first-place prize while the second-place finishers shared $10,400. Bede and Behar face Buhler and Musch in the third-place match Sunday in the $80,000 event.

Pires and Silva, who were upset 15-4 Friday by Rodrigues and Samuel, eliminated top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno of the United States with a 15-11 win Friday to advance to the final four.

McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Reno (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), the No. 1- ranked team on the Evian Tour, finished fifth in the competition after winning two of four matches Friday. McPeak and Reno lost a 15-8 decision to Behar and Bede in Friday's opening match before defeating 19th- seeded Edilma Costa and Magda Lima of Brazil 15-12 and 21st-seeded Gerusa Costa and Maria Salgado of Brazil 15-10.

Third-seeded Karolyn Kirby (Brookline, Mass./San Diego) and Angela Rock (Carlsbad, Calif.) won only one of three matches Friday as the pair lost 15-11 to Rodrigues and Samuel before defeating eighth-seeded Liane Fenwick and Anita Palm of Australia 15-4.

Kirby and Rock finished seventh in the international event after being eliminated from the competition when Buhler and Musch scored a 15-11 win.

Buhler and Musch advanced to the final four by upsetting fourth- seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Australia 15-13. Cook and Pottharst dropped into the elimination bracket after losing 15-12 to Bede and Behar.
