PIRES/SILVA WIN FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL EVENT AS BRAZIL SWEEPS AGAIN
RECIFE, BRAZIL - Brazil produced a sweep of the medals here Sunday for the second straight week as Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva scored a 12-6, 10-12 and 12-10 win over fellow country women Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel in the championship match of the second FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series event of the 1996 season.
Pires and Silva, who were seeded first, advanced to the finals with a 15-10 win over eighth-seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar of Brazil Saturday. The winners shared the $16,000 first-place event prize and split the $13,200 bonus award.
The fifth-seeded Rodrigues and Samuel, who advanced to the finals with a 16-14 win over third-seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst Saturday, shared $22,400 for finishing second, including a $12,000 bonus. Both the tandems of Pires/Silva and Rodrigues/Samuel will represent Brazil in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
In the third-place match, Bede and Behar defeated Cook and Pottharst 15-8. The Brazilians split $16,000 for third while Cook and Pottharst, who will represent Australia in the Atlanta Olympic Games, shared $12,000 for fourth.
The gold, silver and bronze medal sweep by the Brazilians marked the second time in FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series history that a country has claimed the top three places at an international stop.
With the sweep, Brazil has now claimed 34 medals in 23 FIVB Women's events since the start of the series in August, 1992. Brazil has won eight events while placing second 13 times and third 13 times. The United States has 33 medals (15 golds, nine silver and nine bronze) with Australia (one silver) and Germany (one bronze) one medal each.
For the second-time in 23 FIVB Beach events, the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour players from the United States did not have a team in the final four of an international event. Evian Tour teams finished the second 1996 FIVB event with two fifths, a seventh, a ninth and a 25th by posting a 10-10 record in the competition.
The United States was 2-0 against Norway and 1-0 versus Denmark, England, Indonesia, Japan and Netherlands. USA tandems were 1-5 against Brazilians, and 0-1 against Australia, Germany and Italy with two matches between Evian Tour.
United States tandems of Barbra Fontana Harris (Laguna Beach, Calif.)/Kirby (Brookline, Mass./San Diego) and Liz Masakayan (San Diego)/Angela Rock (Carlsbad, Calif.) tied for fifth. Each team split $3,600 for the event and will each earn a $2,700 bonus. Fontana Harris and Kirby posted a 2-2 match mark and Masakayan and Rock were 3-2.
Karrie Poppinga (Mililani, Hi.) and Christine Schaefer (Florence, Ky./San Diego) tied for seventh to share $2,400 for the event and split a $3,600 bonus. Poppinga and Schaefer, who finished 17th in last week's in Maceio, Brazil, won four of six matches this week with three upset wins.
Second-seeded Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Nancy Reno (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), the No. 1-ranked team on the Evian Tour, posted their worst finish ever in 27 events together by placing ninth. McPeak and Reno, who had a 1-2 match mark this week to share $2,000, finished fifth last week in Maceio.
Desiree Leipham (Reardon, Wash./Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Kathleen Luciano, Evian Tour players seeded 27th, tied for 25th in the competition to split $800.
The 28-team FIVB event continues through Sunday in northeast Brazil. Following the Recife event, the international series halts play for two months before resuming action June 21-23 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., for a combined men's and women's events June 21-23.
Fourteen of the women's teams entered in the Recife event, including McPeak and Reno, will compete July 23-28 in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga. A total of 16 teams will compete in the women's Olympic competition with the final two spots being determined June 4-9 in the U. S. Olympic Beach Trials in Baltimore, Md.

BRAZILIANS BATTLE FOR FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL TITLE FOR SECOND- STRAIGHT WEEK
RECIFE, BRAZIL - It will be a repeat final for the second-straight week with Brazilians Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel challenging Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva in the FIVB Women's Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series title match here Sunday.
Pires/Silva tandem defeated Rodrigues and Samuel 12-6 and 12-11 to win last weekend's event in Maceio, Brazil, to win their second- straight FIVB event as the pair captured the world championships last month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The top-seeded Pires and Silva advanced to the finals by defeating eighth-seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar of Brazil 15-8 in Saturday's first semi-final match.
Seeded fifth in the FIVB event, Rodrigues and Samuel advanced to the championship match with a 16-14 win over third-seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Australia. Rodrigues and Samuel, who now won seven of eight matches this week, scored the final two points in the 56-minute match after leading 14-8 before being tied at 14-14.
Sunday's championship team will split the $16,000 first-place prize along with sharing the $13,200 bonus pool. The runnersup will split $10,400 for the event and share a $12,000 bonus. Bede and Behar, who captured third-place last weekend in Maceio, challenge Cook and Pottharst in the consolation match. The winners will split $6,400 for the event and share $9,600 from the bonus pool.

RECIFE, BRAZIL - For the second-straight week, the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will not have a team in the final four following play here Friday in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series event.
Friday's competition saw six "upsets" in 10 matches as host Brazil advanced three teams to Saturday's Olympic Crossing semi-finals along with a tandem from Australia.
Saturday's first semi-final match is an all-Brazilian affair when eighth-seeded Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar challenge second-seeded Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva.
Fifth-seeded Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel of Brazil face third-seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Germany in Saturday's second semi-final match.
The tandems of Pires/Silva and Cook/Pottharst advanced to the final fours with championship bracket semi-finals wins. Pires and Silva downed fourth-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Karolyn Kirby (Brookline, Mass./San Diego) 15-6 while Cook and Pottharst defeated seventh-seeded Liz Masakayan (San Diego) and Angela Rock (Carlsbad, Calif.) 15-9.
The Bede/Behar and Rodrigues/Samuel teams advanced through the elimination bracket to earn a spot in the finals. Bede and Behar ousted Masakayan and Rock 15-6 to advance to Saturday's play. Rodrigues and Samuel eliminated Fontana Harris and Kirby 15-12 to gain a spot in the final four.

RECIFE, BRAZIL - Two teams from the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour advanced to Friday's championship semi-finals following play here Thursday in the second of 10 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series events in 1996.
Fourth-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Karolyn Kirby (Brookline, Mass./San Diego) and seventh-seeded Liz Masakayan (San Diego) and Angela Rock (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored quarter-final wins for the United States to advance.
Masakayan and Rock scored one of Thursday's six upsets by defeating fellow Evian Tour competitors Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Nancy Reno (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Encinitas, Calif.) 15-12.
With the win, Masakayan and Rock face third-seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Australia in the second of two championship bracket semi-finals Friday. Fontana Harris and Kirby play top- seeded Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva of Brazil in the first semi- final.

THREE EVIAN TOUR TEAMS ADVANCE IN FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL EVENT
RECIFE, BRAZIL - Three teams from the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour advanced to Thursday's championship quarter-finals after opening round play here Wednesday in the second of 10 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series events in 1996.
Second-seeded Holly McPeak (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Nancy Reno (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Encinitas, Calif.), fourth-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Karolyn Kirby (Brookline, Mass./San Diego) and seventh-seeded Liz Masakayan (San Diego) and Angela Rock (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored second-round wins for the United States to advance.
Wednesday play saw six upsets, including a 15-4 win by 23rd-seeded Karrie Poppinga (Mililani, Hi.) and Christine Schaefer (Florence, Ky./San Diego) of the United States over 10-seeded Audrey Cooper and Amanda Glover of Great Britian.
However, Poppinga and Schaefer dropped a 15-13 decision in 42 minutes to Masakayan and Rock to drop into the elimination bracket where they face the winner of the match between 24th-seeded Laura Bruschini and Cristana Parenzan of Italy versus Camilia Funck and Petnille Jorgensen of Denmark Thursday.
Thursday's play opens with elimination bracket matches with Evian Tour players Desiree Leipham (Reardon, Wash./Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Kathleen Luciano facing 11th-seeded Ana Maria Solazzi and Consuelo Turetta of Italy. Seeded 27th in the competition, Leipham and Luciano dropped a 15-0 decision to sixth-seeded Beate Buhler and Danja Musch of Germany.
McPeak and Reno, the No. 1-ranked team on the Evian Tour, face Rock and Masakayan in Thursday's fourth quarter-final match. McPeak and Reno advanced with a 15-7 win over Debora Schoon and Lisette Van de Ven of the Netherlands while Masakayan and Rock were defeating both 26th-seeded Luciana Lerrios and Luciana Sertic of Brazil 15-12 and the Poppinga/Schaefer tandem.
Fontana Harris and Kirby, who are playing together in an event for the first-time in their professional career, defeated 13th-seeded Maya Hashimoto and Yukiko Takahashi of Japan 15-3 to advance to a quarter-final meeting against Merita Berntsen and Ragni Hestad of Norway.
Berntsen and Hested scored Wednesday's biggest upset by defeating fifth-seeded Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel of Brazil 15-9. Rodrigues and Samuel finished second in last weekend's FIVB event in Maceio, Brazil, by dropping the championship match to top-seeded Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva of Brazil.
Pires and Silva play eighth-seeded Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil in Thursday's first championship quarter-final match. Behar and Bede finished third last week in Maceio by defeating Buhler and Musch in the consolation finals.
Third-seeded Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Australia face 22nd-seeded Adriana Rodrigues and Karina Silva of Brazil in the other quarter-final match. Rodrigues and Silva advanced with a 15- 8 upset win over Buhler and Musch.
The 28-team FIVB event continues through Sunday in northeast Brazil. Following the Recife event, the international series halts play for two months before resuming action June 21-23 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., for a combined men's and women's events June 21-23.
Fourteen of the women's teams entered in the Recife event, including McPeak and Reno, will compete July 23-28 in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga. A total of 16 teams will compete in the women's Olympic competition with the final two spots being determined June 4-9 in the United States Olympic Beach Trials in Baltimore, Md.
