PRE-EVENT SEEDINGS

42 TEAMS ENTER EVIAN HERMOSA BEACH OPEN AS MASAKAYAN RETURNS

HERMOSA BEACH, CALIF. - With the return of Liz Masakayan to competition, the seedings at the top for this weekend's $50,000 Evian Hermosa Beach Open change slightly when 42 teams begin competition here Friday (May 3) at The Pier.

The most popular site on the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, Hermosa Beach will be hosting an event for the 10th-straight year at The Pier with ABC Sports providing same-day coverage of Sunday's (May 5) championship match.

The Evian Hermosa Beach Open is the fifth of 16 dates on the 1996 Evian Tour, including the third of 14 outdoor events, as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association starts its 10th-season of operation.

The three-day Evian Hermosa Beach Open is a "modified" double- elimination event. A 10-match, 14-team qualifying session is set for 9 a.m. (PDT) Friday (May 3) at The Pier to determine the final four seeds in the 32-team main draw.

Championship competition starts at 1 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday (May 4). Four teams will advance to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday (May 5). The championship match is set for 12 p.m. followed by the third-place match.

Masakayan, who missed last weekend's Coors Light Beach Volley '96 in Puerto Rico to rest her knees, returns to form the second-seeded team this weekend with Angela Rock behind Karolyn Kirby and Nancy Reno.

Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak, who won the Coors Light Beach Volley '96 by defeating Patty Dodd and Rock 15-10 in the Puerto Rico finale, drop to third in the seedings followed by Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley.

With Rock joining forces with Masakayan, Dodd will play with Cammy Ciarelli as the seventh-seeded team behind the tandems of Elaine Roque/Dennie Shupryt-Knoop and Gail Castro/Deb Richardson.

Kirby and Reno, who finished fourth in Puerto Rico by losing 15-12 to Fontana Harris and Hanley in the Olympic Crossing consolation match, are the top-rated Evian Tour team for the second-straight event.

Reno, the Evian Tour's top hitter and blocker in 1995, joins forces with Kirby for their 11th career event together, including their seventh domestic stop.

Reno and Kirby have combined to win six of 10 overall pro beach events to share $114,876. Kirby and Reno, who played together in the final five Evian Tour events in 1992, have won three domestic titles enroute to a 24-6 match mark together while sharing $68,876.

The Kirby/Reno tandem won three of four international stops, including last November's FIVB Beach stop on Carolina Beach in Puerto Rico. The pair also won the first-ever international stops in Almeria, Spain (Aug. 16, 1992) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Feb. 14, 1993).

When Reno split with McPeak for last week's event, the change of the No. 1-seeded team marked only the third-time in the 10-season history of the WPVA that the top-seeded tandem has changed during the season.

Despite the change, McPeak and Reno will still compete together in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games as the top team for the United States after finishing second on the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series tour.

Honored as the Evian Tour's top rookie in 1994 and most improved player in 1995, Arce won her first event title in Puerto Rico as she and McPeak were playing their first beach event together.

Former indoor teammates, Arce and McPeak are 1987 graduates of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif. The pair also played collegiately together at Cal-Berkeley before McPeak finished her career at UCLA.

The Evian Hermosa Beach Open winning team will split $11,000 for first-place with the second-place finishers sharing $8,100. The third-place team will share $5,700 while fourth-place finishers split $4,100.

The Evian Tour opened the outdoor season with the MCI Open at Deerfield Beach (Fla.) when top-seeded McPeak and Reno scored a 15- 8 win over second-seeded Masakayan and Rock in the championship match Apr. 7.

Kirby, the winningest women's player in pro beach volleyball history (62 domestic and international event titles and $559,649.13), and Christine Schaefer won the indoor opener in Fairfax Feb. 3.

McPeak and Reno captured the New York indoor event Feb. 24 to split the biggest paycheck ($31,500) in women's beach history as the pair downed Masakayan and Rock 15-13.

The Evian Hermosa Beach Open is the final event before 24 Evian Tour players have to decide entries for the United States Olympic Trials (June 4-9 in Baltimore, Md.). Entries are due to USA Volleyball Monday (May 6).

Evian Tour tandems will fill three of the 16 Atlanta Olympic Games beach spots. The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games' is July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.
