KIRBY/RENO CAPTURE SAN DIEGO OPEN BEACH EVENT AS OLYMPIC TRIALS LOOM

SAN DIEGO - Top-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Nancy Reno scored three- straight wins here Sunday (May 19) to capture the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event at Mariner's Point.

The San Diego Open winners split the $9,400 first-place prize as Kirby and Reno defeated fourth-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley 15-9 in the title match.

The win was the second Sunday over the Fontana Harris/Hanley tandem as Kirby and Reno downed their rivals 15-4 in the championship bracket semi-finals.

Kirby and Reno, who captured their fourth Evian Tour title together, avenged a heart-breaking 12-11 loss to Fontana Harris and Hanley in the Olympic Crossing finals of the Evian Hermosa Beach Open May 5.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who shared $7,000 for third-place, advanced to the title match with a pair of Sunday wins over third- seeded Liz Masakayan and Angela Rock (15-3) and second-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak (15-9).

Arce and McPeak, who won last month's event in Puerto Rico, captured third for the second-straight event with their 15-10 triumph over sixth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop. The third-place finishers shared $5,000.

Kirby, who has now won a record 57 Evian Tour titles, also captured her fifth San Diego Open title after capturing the 1991 and 1992 crowns with Rock and the 1993 and 1994 titles with Masakayan.

Combined with her third-place finish in the 1990 San Diego event with Patty Dodd, Kirby has won 38 of 42 matches in San Diego, including 26-straight from 1991 through three matches in 1995

Reno, who captured her 15 Evian Tour title, teamed with McPeak to win the 1995 San Diego Open by defeating Hanley and Rock 15-10 in the finals. Kirby finished third last season with Masakayan.

The San Diego Open, the fourth of 14 outdoor stops on the 1996 Evian Tour, was the final event used in determining the seedings for the United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Trials. Seedings for the June 4-9 Olympic Trials in Baltimore, Md., will be announced Tuesday by USA Volleyball.

Led by Fontana Harris and Hanley, 11 teams from the Evian Tour will vie for the remaining two spots on the 1996 United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Team.

McPeak and Reno have earned a spot in the 18-team 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games women's beach field by finishing as the top-rated United States tandem on the 1995-96 FIVB circuit by winning six of eight events.

The second berth on the United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Team will be determined June 7 in a 4:30 p.m. (EDT) match at the Harborview Complex in Baltimore. The third spot will be determined June 9 in a 12 p.m. match.

Fontana Harris and Hanley earned an automatic spot in the Olympic Trials Final Four June 7-9 by finishing as the second-ranked United States team on the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series circuit.

The other 10 teams will compete June 4-5 for the other three spots in the Olympic Trials' final four. The preliminary rounds will feature a double-elimination format with two teams from the winner's bracket and one team from the loser's bracket advancing to the Final Four.
