The fifth-most popular site on the Evian Tour, the Evian Austin Open will be staged at the Emerald Point Pro Volleyball Club at the Marina (5971 Hi Line Road, 512/266-1683 or 266-1685).

Located next to Carlos n'Charlie's on Lake Travis, four courts were constructed last spring to house the Evian Tour event. Prior to last year's inaugural event at Carlos n'Charlie's, the Evian Tour had been staging Austin events at Zilker Park for four-straight years.

The Evian Austin Open will be the seventh of 16 dates on the 1996 Evian Tour, including the fifth of 14 outdoor events, as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association starts its 10th-season of operation.

The Evian Austin Open will start a four-stop Eastern swing for the Evian Tour with other stops in Ocean City, Md. (June 14-16), Newport, R. I. (June 29-30) and Chicago (July 13-14).

The Evian Tour opened the season with five different winning tandems in the first six events. The 1996 campaign started indoor events in Fairfax, Va. (Feb. 3) and New York (Feb. 24) and outdoor stops in Deerfield Beach, Fla. (Apr. 5-7), Puerto Rico (Apr. 27- 28), Hermosa Beach, Calif. (May 3-5) and San Diego (May 18-19).

The three-day Evian Austin Open is a "modified" double-elimination event. Depending on the number of entries, a qualifying session is scheduled for the 8 a.m. (CDT) Friday (May 31) at the Emerald Point Pro Volleyball Club to determine the 32-team main draw.

Championship competition starts at 1 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday (June 1). Twelve (12) teams advance to Sunday's (June 2) competition starting at 8 a.m. The final four starts at 11:30 a.m. June 2 with the tournament finale set for 3 p.m.

Prime Network will televise Evian Tour stops for the fifth-straight season with coverage of eight events, including the Evian Austin Open. Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., will be taping the Evian Austin Open for distribution via Prime Network. Drew Goodman of Denver, Colo., and Maria Barnes of Manhattan Beach, Calif., will provide the commentary. The event will be aired the week of June 2 by Prime.

Evian Natural Spring Water (Great Brands of Europe, Putnam, Conn.) is starting its first season as the WPVA's tour sponsor. Coors Light (Coors Brewing Co., Golden, Colo.) is starting its seventh year of involvement.

The 1996 Evian Tour season will prepare the WPVA players for the United States Olympic Trials and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games when 18 international teams will vie in the inaugural beach volleyball "gold medal" competition.

The United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Trials will be held June 4-9 at the Harborview Complex in Baltimore, Md. The Atlanta Olympic Games' beach competition with be July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.

Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno were named Jan. 26 by USA Volleyball to the United States' Olympic Beach Volleyball Team as the top women's tandem.

With McPeak and Reno already qualified for the Atlanta Olympic Games, 11 other Evian Tour teams will compete for the remaining two spots in Baltimore, including Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley.
