SUNDAY RESULTS

FONTANA HARRIS/HANLEY CAPTURE THE $100,000 EVIAN U. S. OPEN

OCEAN CITY, MD. - Olympians Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley won their second event of the season here Sunday (June 16) by capturing the $100,000 Evian U. S. Open on Dorchester Beach by defeating eighth-seeded Janice Harrer and Gayle Stammer.

By capturing the first of four "major" events on the 1996 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, Fontana Harris and Hanley split the $20,000 first-place prize with the 15-11 win over Harrer and Stammer.

Harrer and Stammer, who became the first eighth-seeded team in Evian Tour history to reach a tournament final, split $15,200 for second-place. ABC Sports taped the event for replay June 23 from 3-4 p.m. (EDT).

The $100,000 prize money for the Evian U. S. Open marked the richest purse in domestic women's beach volleyball history exceeding the previous best of $75,000 for February's four-team indoor event in New York.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who were seeded second this weekend, secured the second spot on the United States Olympic Team by winning the United States Olympic Beach Volleyball Trials in Baltimore June 7.

The "major" title was Hanley's first in her career while Fontana Harris was capturing her second Evian Grand Slam crown after winning the 1994 Evian Best of the Beach I with Lori Forsythe in Las Vegas, Nev.

The win was the seventh in Fontana Harris' Evian Tour career while Hanley was winning for the sixth time. Fontana Harris and Hanley had previously won the Evian Hermosa Beach Open last month (May 5) in Southern Califonria.

Fontana Harris and Hanley advanced to the title match with a 15-10 win over top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno. Harrer and Stammer, who posted their best career finish together, scored a 15- 10 win over fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop to advance to the finals.

McPeak and Reno, who were seeking their third-straight "major" title after winning the Evian National Championships last August at Huntington Beach, Calif., and the Evian Best of the Beach II in Hawaii last September, finished third to share $10,400 by defeating Roque and Shupryt-Knoop 15-10.

Roque and Shupryt-Knoop, who split $8,000 for finishing fourth, had defeated Olympians McPeak and Reno 15-10 earlier Sunday to snap the top-seeded teams 17-match winning steak.

McPeak and Reno were named last January as the United States' No. 1 women's beach volleyball tandem for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games after finishing atop the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series circuit.

The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games' beach volleyball competition is July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.

Gail Castro and Deb Richardson, the Evian Tour's third pair of Olympians, finished fifth in the Evian U. S. Open after being eliminated 15-5 by McPeak and Reno.

Castro and Richardson won four of five matches at the Olympic Trials to secure the third spot on the United States Olympic Team, including a 15-13 qualifying win over Roque and Shupryt-Knoop last Sunday in Baltimore.

CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINALS SET
AS TWO TEAMS SCORE UPSETS
IN THE EVIAN U.S. OPEN

OCEAN CITY, MD. - Sixth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Chris Schaefer knocked off the number three seeds while fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop upended the fourth seeds in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket here Saturday (June 15) during the opening rounds for the $100,000 Evian U. S. Open.

Poppinga/Schaefer broke away from a 4-4 tie to take a 9-5 lead, only to see Arce/Dodd tie the match at 10-10. In a match that had five ties and five lead changes, Poppinga and Schaefer claimed a 15-13 victory after scoring the final three points. That duo will face Olympians Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley at 9 a.m. to decide who will advance to the Olympic Crossing semifinals.

The tandem of Roque/Shupryt-Knoop knocked off Liz Masakayan and Angela Rock into the contender's bracket with a 15-9 victory after trailing 7-3 early in the match. With Roque and Shupryt-Knoop in the midst of an 8-0 scoring run, Masakayan had to take a 15-minute injury timeout due to muscle spasms on the left side of her back. Her team was outscored 6-2 following her return to action. Roque and Shupryt-Knoop meet top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno in another 9 a.m. match which will decide an Olympic Crossing semifinalist.

Twelve (12) teams advanced to the final rounds of 14 matches Sunday in the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event. Play starts at 8 a.m. with four matches in the contender's bracket featuring the eight teams which are still in the hunt. Masakayan/Rock takes on Marie Andersson/Pat Keller, Janice Harrer/Gayle Stammer face Valinda Hilleary/Monique Oliver, Marla O'Hara/Ali Wood battle Olympians Gail Castro/Deb Richardson, and Arce/Dodd are pitted against Jackie Campbell/Leanne Schuster.

Four teams advance to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals at 11:30 a.m. Sunday with the tournament finale set for 2 p.m. and will be taped by ABC Sports for replay June 23 from 3-4 p.m. (EDT).

CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW SET AS TWO TEAMS QUALIFY FOR $100,000 EVIAN U. S. OPEN

OCEAN CITY, MD. - The beach volleyball tandems of Sue Cunningham/Karen Hoyt and Jane Linn/Suzanne Trommer earned the last two berths in the 32-team championship main draw after posting the best match marks here Friday (June 14) in the qualifying rounds for the $100,000 Evian U. S. Open.

Sue Cunningham and Karen Hoyt, both from Virginia Beach, Va., posted a 2-1 match mark in the round-robin qualifying play, along with two other teams. Cunningham/Hoyt earned the 31st-seed in the main draw, by virtue of a point ratio tiebreaker, and a championship first-round meeting against Olympians Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley.

Jane Linn, of New York, and Suzanne Trommer, of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., barely advanced through qualifying as the 32nd seed. The duo squeaked past Wendy Martin and Teri Van Dyke by the slimmest of margins in the tiebreaker. One fewer point scored or one additional point yielded would have resulted in the other team advancing.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. (EDT) Saturday on Dorchester Beach when Olympians Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno face Linn and Trommer in the first match of the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event on center court.

OLYMPIANS SET AS EVIAN TOUR PREPARES FOR FIRST "MAJOR" EVENT

EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - It's back to "tour" business for the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour after spending a "competitive" week in Baltimore determining the final two berths on the United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team.

The ninth annual Evian U. S. Open, the first of four "major" events on the 1996 Evian Tour, is set for Friday through Sunday (June 14- 16) on Dorchester Beach in Ocean City, Md.

The tandems of Barbra Fontana Harris/Linda Hanley and Gail Castro/Deb Richardson now joins the duo of Holly McPeak/Nancy Reno on the United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team. The trio will compete in an 18-team field July 23-28 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games on Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.

Fontana Harris and Hanley won both of their matches in Baltimore to earn on the second spot on the United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team while Castro and Richardson won four of five matches to secure the third spot. Both teams scored two-point victories over Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop to earn the Olympic berths.

McPeak and Reno gained their spot in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games by finishing as the top team from the United States on the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series circuit.

The Evian U. S. Open will also be the third of five Evian Tour events to be covered by ABC Sports as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association reaches the midway point of its 10th-season of operation.

The $100,000 prize money for the Evian U. S. Open will also mark the richest purse in domestic women's beach volleyball history exceeding the previous best of $75,000 for February's four-team indoor event in New York.

The event will also be the first-time that the Evian U. S. Open has been held outside of the State of California as the previous eight events have been staged in Southern California.

In addition, the beach volleyball event is only the fifth-time an Evian Grand Slam stop has been held east of the Pacific time zone. The Evian Invitational, the "prestigious" eight-team event, has been held on the eastern seaboard (1993 in Quincy, Mass., and 1994 and 1995 in Newport, R. I. The 1996 Evian Invitational will be held Aug. 8-11 in New York's Central Park.

The three-day Evian U. S. Open is a "modified" double-elimination event. Depending on the number of entries, a Friday (June 14) qualifying session is scheduled on Dorchester Beach at 1 p.m. (EDT) to determine the final four seeds in the 32-team main draw.

Championship competition starts at 9 a.m. Saturday (June 15) with 48 matches in both the championship and contender's brackets. Twelve (12) teams advance to Sunday's (June 16) final rounds of 14 matches at 8 a.m.

Four teams advance to Sunday's Olympic Crossing semi-finals at 11:30 a.m. with the tournament finale is set for 3 p.m. and will be taped by ABC Sports for replay June 23 from 3-4 p.m. (eastern).

ABC Sports has provide coverage of Evian Tour events from Deerfield Beach, Fla. (Apr. 7) and Hermosa Beach, Calif. (May 5).

ABC Sports will also cover two other Evian Grand Slam events from New York (The Evian Invitational, Aug. 11) and Huntington Beach, Calif. (Evian National Championships, Aug. 18).

The Evian Grand Slam series features the top four events on the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. A pair of 32-team, double-elimination tournaments, an eight-team invitational and a 12-team round-robin/bracket event makes-up the Evian Grand Slam series.

The 1993 season was the first full-year for the Evian Grand Slam series with the Top of the Tour competition being added to the series. The Top of the Tour was replaced by the 1994 Evian Best of the Beach as a "major' event.

In 1993, Karolyn Kirby became the first player to win every Evian Grand Slam event in a season by capturing the three team events with Liz Masakayan and the Top of the Tour competition.

There has been 26 Grand Slam events since the WPVA began operation in 1987. Kirby has won a record 12 Evian Grand Slam events. The team of Kirby/Masakayan has won a record eight grand slam team titles.

Kirby has earned the most money with $83,337.13 as she has a record 21 final four finishes in 24 Evian Grand Slam events. Lori Forsythe, the only players to compete in all 26 grand slams, will miss the Evian U. S. Open as she is expecting her first child July 27.

A total of 218 players have competed in Evian Grand Slam events, including 186 in the Evian U. S. Open. Of the 218 players, 116 have earned monies with the 26 events yielding a total of $904,500. Twelve teams and 14 players have earned Evian Grand Slam titles.

Since April, 1995, McPeak and Reno have shared $260,480 in 28 domestic (18) and international (10) events with 17 firsts, five seconds, three thirds, a fourth, a fifth and a ninth.

The McPeak/Reno tandem has won 87.2 percent of their matches (143- 21). On the Evian Tour, McPeak and Reno shared $175,480 with 11 firsts, five seconds and two thirds with a 88-11 match mark.

Kirby and Christine Schaefer scored upset wins over McPeak/Reno (15-13) and Masakayan/Angela Rock (15-4) to win the $21,000 first- place prize in the Fairfax, Va. indoor opener Feb. 3.

McPeak and Reno rebounded at the New York indoor event (Feb. 24) by capturing the record $31,500 first-place prize by downing Masakayan and Rock 15-13 in the finals.

With ABC Sports covering the outdoor opener in Deerfield Beach, McPeak and Reno posted six-straight wins to capture the first-place prize, including a 15-8 win over Masakayan and Rock in the Apr. 7 final.

Following two FIVB events in Brazil, the domestic competition resumed with McPeak and Arce defeating Rock and Patty Dodd 15-10 to win the Coors Light Beach Volley '96 Apr. 28 in Puerto Rico.

Fontana Harris and Hanley captured the third outdoor event by scoring two upset wins in the Olympic Crossing rounds at the Evian Hermosa Beach Open, including a 12-11 decision over Kirby and Reno in the May 5 ABC televised finale. Kirby and Reno avenged the Hermosa setback by capturing the San Diego Open with a 6-0 match mark, including a 15-9 win over Fontana Harris and Hanley in the championship match.

With McPeak and Reno competing together in the Evian Austin Open (May 31-June 2), the pair posted six straight wins enroute to their 11th domestic title together. Arce and Kirby lost the Texas finale to McPeak and Reno 15-7.

Led by Kirby, six players are competing for the 10th-season on the Evian Tour. Kirby is the winningest player with 57 career titles enroute to 533 career match wins and $391,524.13 in earnings. Other 10-season veterans are Jackie Campbell, Castro (three event titles, $183,631.13), Janice Harrer (12 titles, $172,982.75), Roque (three titles, $208,267.21) and Gayle Stammer (one title). Here are the sites and top three finishes for the past eight Evian U. S. Open as the 1996 Ocean City event is the 135th in Evian Tour history.
