NEWPORT, R. I. - Second-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley captured their second-straight Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event here Sunday (June 30) on Easton's Beach by winning the $40,000 Newport Open.
The United States' No. 2 women's Olympic Beach Volleyball tandem, Fontana Harris and Hanley out-lasted third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock 22-20 in a record-setting championship match.
The win was the third this season on the Evian Tour for Fontana Harris and Hanley, who had captured titles in Hermosa Beach, Calif., in May and two weeks ago in Ocean City, Md.
The 22-20 score in the finale was the highest-scoring championship match in the 10-season history of the Evian Tour and tied the record for the highest-scoring match in women's pro beach history.
The match featured 12 ties as Hanley's "silver bullet" ace broke the 20-20 deadlock for the fourth lead change of the match. After the 76th and 77th side-outs of the match, Kirby's shot at the end- line sailed long to end the second longest match in terms of time (86 minutes) in Evian Tour history.
Fontana Harris and Hanley, who won all six of their matches this weekend, closed the seeding gap on top-ranked United States Olympians Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno to eight points (496 team points to 488).
McPeak and Reno, who dropped a 16-14 decision to Kirby and Reno in the Olympic Crossing semi-finals earlier Sunday, finished third by defeating 10th-seeded Krista Blomquist and Danalee Bragado 15-4.
The fourth-place finish was Bragado's best Evian Tour place as she and Blomquist advanced to the final fours with a 16-14 win over fourth-seeded Lisa Arce and Patty Dodd before losing 15-3 to Fontana Harris and Hanley in the semi-finals.
McPeak and Reno earned the No. 1 spot on the 1996 United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team after finishing the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series season as the top- ranked team internationally.
Fontana Harris and Hanley earned their spot in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games by winning the United States Olympic Beach Trials earlier this month in Baltimore, Md. The Newport Open win was the 11th pro beach title for Fontana and 13th for Hanley.
A Brookline, Mass., native, Kirby celebrated her 35th birthday Sunday as she and Rock were teaming together for the 30th-time in their Evian Tour careers. Kirby and Rock had won 17 of the previous 29 Evian Tour events for the second-most in women's pro beach history. Their last championship final appearance was June 21, 1992 in Austin, Tex., when Kirby and Rock won a double-final over Dodd and Elaine Roque.
Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., taped the Newport Open for distribution via Prime Network. Drew Goodman of Denver, Colo., and Maria Barnes of Manhattan Beach, Calif., will provide the commentary. The event will be aired the week of June 30 by Prime. The Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, which will take a break for the "Fourth of July" weekend, resumes competition July 13-14 on North Avenue Beach in Chicago for the $75,000 Chicago Open. The Chicago Open will be the final stop for the Evian Tour's three Olympic teams prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
NEWPORT, R. I. - Led by Olympic tandems Holly McPeak/Nancy Reno, Barbra Fontana Harris/Linda Hanley and Gail Castro/Deb Richardson, a total of 30 teams have entered the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour here this weekend (June 29-30) for the Newport Open on Easton's Beach.
The $40,000 Newport Open also features the renewal of a partnership between New England native Karolyn Kirby with Angela Rock as the pair had previously won the second-most titles (17 in 29 tournaments together) in Evian Tour history.
Easton's Beach hosts the Evian Tour for the third-straight season as the Newport Open is the ninth of 16 events on the Evian Tour as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association passes the half-way point of its 10th-season of operation.
McPeak and Reno are seeded first in the Newport Open as the pair earned the No. 1 spot on the 1996 United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team after finishing the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series season as the top-ranked team internationally.
Fontana Harris and Hanley, who earned their spot in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games by winning the United States Olympic Beach Trials earlier this month in Baltimore, are seeded second this weekend while the Castro/Richardson tandem is seeded seventh.
Castro and Richardson captured the third spot on the United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team by winning four of five matches at the Olympic Trials, including a 15-13 qualifying win over Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop in Baltimore. The 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games' beach volleyball competition is July 23-28 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton County, Ga.
With the Newport return, the Evian Tour will feature a "new look" with New England's beach volleyball fans getting a 30-team, 58- match double-elimination tournament on Easton's Beach.
For the previous three years in New England, including stops in Newport in both 1994 and 1995, the Evian Tour had featured an eight-team, 30-match round-robin event.
Kirby, a native of Brookline, Mass., and Liz Masakayan had teamed to win the last three New England visits, including a 1993 win in Quincy, Mass., and the 1994 and 1995 wins in Newport. However, Masakayan will not compete this weekend as she rests her knees.
Combined with a 1992 title in Cape Cod, Mass., with Linda Chisholm, Masakayan had captured all four the Evian Tour's New England stops with a combined match mark of 28-2.
The Newport Open is a "modified" double-elimination event. Championship competition starts at 9 a.m. Saturday (June 29) and at 8 a.m. Sunday (June 30). Four teams will advance to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals Sunday afternoon with the tournament finale set for 3 p.m.
Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., will be taping the Newport Open for distribution via Prime Network. Drew Goodman of Denver, Colo., and Maria Barnes of Manhattan Beach, Calif., will provide the commentary. The event will be aired the week of June 30 by Prime.
Led by Kirby, six players are competing for the 10th-season on the Evian Tour. Kirby is the winningest player with 57 career titles enroute to 533 career match wins and $391,524.13 in earnings. Other 10-season veterans are Jackie Campbell, Castro (three event titles, $186,631.13), Harrer (12 titles, $180,582.75), Roque (three titles, $212,267.21) and Stammer (one title).
