SUNDAY FINAL RESULTS

OLYMPIAN FINAL NETS MCPEAK/RENO WIN AT CHICAGO OPEN

CHICAGO, ILL. - In a final featuring two Olympic-bound teams, top- seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno defeated second-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley 15-11 to capture the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event here Sunday (July 14) on North Avenue Beach.

McPeak and Reno, who will be seeded second in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games beach volleyball competition starting July 23, rebounded from an opening loss Sunday to split the $15,000 first- place prize in the $75,000 Chicago Open.

After losing 15-10 to fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt- Knoop Sunday morning, McPeak and Reno rallied from a 9-4 deficit to defeat third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock 15-11 in the Olympic Crossing semi-final match.

In the third-place match, Roque and Shupryt-Knoop downed Kirby and Rock 15-10. Roque and Shupryt-Knoop, who dropped a 15-2 semi-final match to Fontana Harris and Hanley, shared $7,800 for third-place while Kirby and Rock split $6,000.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who will be seeded fourth in the Olympic beach competition, split $11,400 for finishing second. Fontana Harris and Hanley had won the past two Evian Tour events before finishing second this weekend.

The title was the fourth this season for McPeak and Reno, who have now won 12 Evian Tour championships since April 1995 along with 19 pro titles, including six on the international circuit.

The Chicago Open was the final tune-up for the United States Olympic tandems of McPeak/Reno, Fontana Harris/Hanley and Gail Castro/Deb Richardson (seeded third in Atlanta and seventh-place finisher Sunday) as the trio opens play in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games July 23.

The Chicago Open was a homecoming for eight Evian Tour players, including Reno and Shupryt-Knoop as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association staged an event in Chicago for the first- time since its inaugural season in 1987.

Other Illinois natives competing are Nancy Mason (finished 13th with Alissa Lund), Jeanette Kollasch (finished 25th with Jackie Auzias de Turenne), and the tandems of Stacy Kammes/Amy Peistrup- Matthews (finished 17th) and Erin Borske/Christine Rehor-Federico (finished 17th).

Kammes and Peistrup-Matthews scored the Chicago Open's biggest upset win by downing ninth-seeded Marla O'Hara and Ali Wood 15-13 in Saturday's opening round. Despite losing their next two matches, Kammes and and Peistrup-Matthews "cashed" their first pro pay check by sharing $600. Rehor-Federico also "cashed" her first pro check by finishing 17th while Mason shared $1,350 with Lund.

Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., taped the Chicago Open for distribution via Prime Network. The event will be aired this week by Prime.

LOCAL SHUPRYT-KNOOP TEAMS WITH ROGUE FOR CHICAGO OPEN BEACH UPSET

CHICAGO, ILL. - Chicago native Dennie Shupryt-Knoop teamed with Elaine Roque to score a 15-10 upset win here Saturday (July 13) over fourth-seeded Lisa Arce and Patty Dodd to advance to the championship bracket semi-finals in the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event on North Avenue Beach.

Seeded fifth in the $75,000 Chicago Open, Roque and Shupryt-Knoop challenge top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno in the championship bracket semi-finals Sunday at 9 a.m. (CDT).

McPeak and Reno won three matches like Roque and Shupryt-Knoop Saturday, including a 15-9 win over eighth-seeded Gail Castro and Deb Richardson to advance to the championship bracket semi-finals.

The Chicago Open is the final tune-up for the United States Olympic tandems of McPeak/Reno, Barbra Fontana Harris/Linda Hanley and Castro/Richardson as the trio opens play in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games July 23.

The Chicago Open is a "modified" double-elimination event with play starting at 8 a.m. Sunday (July 14) with four matches in the contender's bracket. Four teams will advance to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals Sunday afternoon with the tournament finale set for 3 p.m.

McPeak and Reno face Roque and Shupryt-Knoop in Sunday's first championship bracket semi-final match while third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock challenge second-seeded Fontana Harris and Hanley.

OLYMPIANS LEAD CHICAGO OPEN FIELD IN FINAL TUNEUP

CHICAGO, ILL. - Led by Olympic tandems Holly McPeak/Nancy Reno, Barbra Fontana Harris/Linda Hanley and Gail Castro/Deb Richardson, a total of 31 teams have entered the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event here this weekend (July 13-14) for the Chicago Open at First Avenue Beach.

The $75,000 Chicago Open also features a homecoming for six Evian Tour players, including Reno and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop as the Women's Professional Volleyball Association stages an event in Chicago for the first-time since its inaugural season in 1987.

McPeak and Reno are seeded first in the Chicago Open as the pair earned the No. 1 spot on the 1996 United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team after finishing the 1995-96 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series season as the top-ranked team internationally.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who earned their spot in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games by winning the United States Olympic Beach Trials last month in Baltimore, are seeded second this weekend while the Castro/Richardson tandem is seeded eighth.

Castro and Richardson captured the third spot on the United States Women's Olympic Beach Volleyball Team by winning four of five matches at the Olympic Trials, including a 15-13 qualifying win over Elaine Roque and Shupryt-Knoop in Baltimore.

McPeak and Reno have captured three of the nine Evian tour stops this season, including an indoor win in New York, and outdoor titles at Deerfield Beach, Fla. (Apr. 7) and Austin, Tex. (June 2).

Led by Karolyn Kirby, six players are competing for the 10th-season on the Evian Tour. Kirby is the winningest player with 57 career titles enroute to 538 career match wins and $395,024.13 in earnings. Other 10-season veterans are Jackie Campbell, Castro (three event titles, $187,431.13), Harrer (12 titles, $180,582.75), Roque (three titles, $212,817.21) and Stammer (one title).
