ANDERSSON/ROQUE CAPTURE PISMO BEACH OPEN
PISMO BEACH, CALIF. - Second-seeded Marie Andersson and Elaine
Roque posted a perfect 6-0 mark in the Pismo Beach Open to capture
the Coors Light Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event here
Sunday.
Andersson and Roque, who were playing in their first Coors Light
Tour event together, defeated top seedeed Deb Richardson and Dennie
Shupryt-Knoop 15-10 in the finals to share the $2,000 first-place
prize.
Richardson and Shupryt-Knoop, who posted an impressive fourth-place
finish in last weekend's FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-
Series event in Hermosa Beach, Calif., split $1,550 for second-
place.
Richardson/Shupryt-Knoop advanced to the finals with a 15-7 win
over sixth-seeded Wendy Fletcher and Karrie Poppinga while
Andersson and Roque downed third-seeded Marla O'Hara and Ali Wood
15-11 to earn a spot in the championship match. O'Hara and Wood
shared the $1,250 third-place prize by scoring a 18-16 win over
Fletcher and Poppinga, who split $1,000 for fourth.
Katy Haller (USC) and Jen Wrightson (San Diego U.), who entered the
Pismo Beach Open as the 32nd and last seeded team, surprised the
Coors Light Tour field by placing ninth to split $400 in their
first professional beach event.
After losing 15-7 to Richardson and Shupryt-Knoop in their opening
match Saturday, Haller and Wrightson scored three upset wins in the
contender's bracket to advance to the final 12. Fourth-seeded
Jackie Campbell and Charlotte Roach ended Haller and Wrightson's
championship dreams with a 16-14 win in Sunday's opening match.
Eight of the Coors Light Tour's top players missed the event due to
their participation in a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-
Series event in Pusan, Korea where Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno
defeated Karolyn Kirby and Liz Masakayan 12-11 and 12-9 to capture
the international title. Coors Light Tour teams of Gail
Castro/Angela Rock and Barbra Fontana Harris/Lori Forsythe finished
fifth and ninth, respectively, in the third FIVB women's event of

Following the Pismo Beach Open, the Coors Light Tour stages its
first event ever in the Pacific Northwest with the inaugural
Jantzen Pro Aug. 5-6 at Portland (Ore.) Meadows. The final three
Coors Light Tour stops are in Long Beach, Calif. (Aug. 11-13),
Huntington Beach, Calif. (Aug. 18-20) and Kauai, Hi. (Sept. 21-23).
