Holly McPeak, Nancy Reno, Barbra Fontana Harris, Linda Hanley, Gail
Castro, Deb Richardson, who represented the United States in the
1996 Atlanta Olympic Games July 23-27 at Atlanta Beach in Clayton
County, Ga., were invited to compete in the four-day Evian
Invitational.
The remaining 10 players for the Evian Invitational were determined
following the July 20-21 Evian Tour event in Long Beach, Calif.,
using the seeding points from the Women's Professional Volleyball
Association.
Fontana Harris and Hanley, who finished fourth in the Olympics,
will be the No. 1 seeded tandem. The pair has won three events
this season, including the first Evian Grand Slam event in Ocean
City, Md., June 16.
The next three ranked teams will be changing partners for the Evian
Invitational. Karolyn Kirby will team with Reno while McPeak
rejoins Lisa Arce as the second- and third-seeded teams,
respectively.
McPeak and Reno, who tied for fifth in the Olympics, have won four
events together this season. McPeak capture a fifth title by
winning with Arce in Puerto Rico last April while Reno and Kirby
teamed to win in San Diego last May.
Patty Dodd and Angela Rock, who finished second in Puerto Rico,
will be seeded fourth. Rock won the last Evian Tour event in Long
Beach with Kirby July 21.
Three of the next four tandems in the Evian Invitational have
played together throughout the 1996 Evian Tour season, including
Elaine Roque/Dennie Shupryt-Knoop (fifth-seeded), Castro/Richardson
(7), and Janice Harrer/Gayle Stammer (8).
Castro and Richardson tied for ninth in the Olympics. Harrer and
Stammer were the "surprised team" in the United States Olympic
Trials in June while Roque and Shupryt-Knoop dropped a pair of two-
point decisions (16-14 and 15-13) in the Olympic Trials to finish
as alternate Olympians.
Karrie Poppinga, who will be playing in her first Evian
Invitational, will enter with Christine Schaefer as the sixth-
seeded tandem. Schaefer teamed with Kirby to win the season
opening at the Evian Indoor in Fairfax, Va. (Feb. 3).
Poppinga and Schaefer finished third in the Long Beach Open and
dropped a 19-17 match to Kirby and Reno in San Diego earlier this
season in a record 91-minute match.
The Evian Invitational has been held past three seasons in New
England, including a visit to Quincy, Mass., in 1993, and Newport,
R. I., in both 1994 and 1995.
Kirby and Liz Masakayan, who has missed four events this season due
to knee problems, had teamed to win the past three Evian
Invitationals, including a 1995 tournament final win over McPeak
and Reno.
Kirby and Masakayan won 1994 Evian Invitational by defeating
Fontana Harris and Lori Forsythe in the final. Castro and Roque
lost the 1993 Evian Invitational finale to Kirby and Masakayan.
Masakayan has been part of the winning team in the last four Evian
Invitational titles after she and Linda Chisholm captured the 1992
championship by defeating Kirby and Angela Rock.

EVIAN INVITATIONAL
The first of two stops that form the "richest" back-to-back events
in women's pro beach volleyball history opens this week when the
top players on the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour begin
competing in an eight-team invitational Thursday-Sunday (Aug. 8-11)
at Rumsey Playfield in New York's Central Park (located mid-park
off Fifth Avenue and 72nd).
The seventh annual Evian Invitational is the second of four "grand
slam" events on the 1996 Evian Tour schedule with the eight teams
competing for $75,000 in prize money.
The second and final part of the "richest" back-to-back events is
set for next weekend (Aug. 16-18) in Huntington Beach, Calif., for
the $100,000 Evian National Championships, the third "major" event
on the 1996 season. The $175,000 for the two Evian Tour events
exceeds the previous "richest" back-to-back events in women's pro
beach history of $160,000 for two events last April in Brazil.
With the City of New York/Parks & Recreation as the "official host"
for the event, Evian Invitational competition begins at 3 p.m.
(EDT) Thursday (Aug. 8) with eight matches on two courts at Central
Park's Rumsey Playfield. Eight matches will be played both Friday
(Aug. 9) and Saturday (Aug. 10). The Friday session starts at 3
p.m. with the Saturday matches starting at 10 a.m. The round-robin
competition will conclude with four matches Sunday (Aug. 11)
starting at 8 a.m. The teams with the second- and third-best match
marks compete in the semi-final match at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with the
semi-final winners challenging the team with the best match mark in
the 2 p.m. championship final. ABC Sports will air the Evian
Invitational championship match from 5-6 p.m. (EDT) Sunday with
Terry Gannon of Raleigh, N. C. and Maria Barnes of Irvine, Calif.,
providing the commentary.
