MCPEAK/RENO CAPTURE SIXTH-STRAIGHT AT EVIAN LONG BEACH INVITATIONAL
LONG BEACH, CALIF. - Top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno
captured their sixth-straight event win here Sunday by winning the
Evian Long Beach Invitational on The Promenade as the Coors Light
Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour introduced a new format for its
125th all-time event.
McPeak and Reno downed third-seeded Lisa Arce and Angela Rock 15-3
in the finals to split the $8,200 first-place prize.
McPeak and Reno have won the last three Coors Light Tour stops in
Old Orchard Beach, Me. (July 9) and Portland, Ore. (Aug. 6) and
here this weekend along with three FIVB Beach Volleyball World
Championship-Series events in Hermosa Beach, Calif. (July 16),
Pusan, Korea (July 22) and Osaka, Japan (July 29).
McPeak and Reno, who have won 35 of their last 36 matches together
on both the domestic and international tours, have shared $130,680
in earnings this season by winning nine of 16 events they have
entered together.
Winners of six Coors Light Tour titles and three FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Championship-Series events this season, McPeak and
Reno have won 94 of 107 matches (88 percent). In addition to nine
event crowns, McPeak and Reno have five seconds and two thirds this
season.
McPeak and Reno advanced to the finals with a 15-5 win over fourth-
seeded Gail Castro and Lori Forsythe while Arce and Rock rallied
from a 4-0 deficit to defeat second-seeded Linda Hanley and Karolyn
Kirby 15-10.
The tandems of Castro/Forsythe and Hanley/Kirby each shared $3,800
for their third-place finishes.
Kirby, the Coors Light Tour's all-time money winner ($352,649.13)
and event winner (55), also notched her 500 career match victory
with a 15-4 win with Hanley over seventh-seeded Patty Dodd and
Christine Schaefer in the quarter-finals.
The $40,000 Evian Long Beach Invitational was the "first-ever"
single-elimination tournament on the Coors Light Tour. In the
previous 124 Coors Light Tour stops, 114 events have featured a
double-elimination format, six events have been a pool-play
shootout, two a individual pool-play event and one featured both
pool and a double-elimination format.

UPSETS CONTINUE AT EVIAN LONG BEACH INVITATIONAL
LONG BEACH, CALIF. - Two upsets highlighted play here Saturday in the
second round of the Evian Long Beach Invitational on The Promenade as the
Coors Light Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour introduced a new format for
its 125th all-time event.
Led by top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno, eight teams advance to
Sunday's quarter-finals starting at 9 a.m (PDT). The quarter-final
winners play at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. followed by the Evian Long Beach
Invitational championship match.
Twelfth-seeded Wendy Fletcher and Karrie Poppinga broke a 4-4 tie with a
five-point run on Poppinga's serve to propel them to a 15-11 win over
fifth-seeded Cammy Ciarelli and Barbra Fontana Harris. With the win,
Fletcher and Poppinga face fourth-seeded Gail Castro and Lori Forsythe
at
9 a.m. Sunday.
Eleventh-seeded Krista Blomquist and Gayle Stammer rallied from a 10-4
deficit to defeat sixth-seeded Deb Richardson and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop 15-
11. With the win, Blomquist and Stammer advanced to the quarter-finals
in the single-elimination event to face third-seeded Lisa Arce and
Angela Rock Sunday at 11 a.m. (PDT).
McPeak and Reno face eighth-seeded Marie Andersson and Elaine Roque in
Sunday's second quarter-final match at 10 a.m. Seventh-seeded Patty Dodd
and Christine Schaefer challenge second-seeded Linda Hanley and Karolyn
Kirby at 12 p.m. Sunday with both winners advancing to the semi-finals.

UPSETS HIGHLIGHT EVIAN LONG BEACH INVITATIONAL
LONG BEACH, CALIF. - Upset wins by the tandems of 17th-seeded Michal
Clingman/Bev Lidyoff and Lisa Gathright/Leanne Schuster highlighted play
here Friday in the opening round of the Evian Long Beach Invitational on
The Promenade as the Coors Light Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour
introduced a new format for its 125th all-time event.
Clingman and Lidyoff scored Friday's first upset with a 15-12 win over
16th-seeded Tiffany Anderson and Helen Reale, who trailed 8-1 and 10-2 in
the match before tying the score at 12s.
The win earned Clingman and Lidyoff an 1 p.m. (PDT) Saturday meeting with
top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno, who earned one of the eight first-
round byes Friday.
Gathright and Schuster led from the start to down 14th-seeded Danalee
Bragado and Monique Oliver 15-4. With the win, Gathright and Schuster
advance to play third-seeded Lisa Arce and Angela Rock at 3 p.m. Saturday
on The Promenade in downtown Long Beach.
With Friday's win, Schuster will post her biggest "pay-day" in her
professional career. A graduate this spring from Arizona State, Schuster
will earn at least $500 this weekend to increase her rookie-season total
to $1,850.
The higher seeded teams won the other six matches Friday to advance to
Saturday's second-round starting at 9 a.m. when ninth-seeded Marla O'Hara
and Ali Wood challenge eighth-seeded Marie Andersson and Elaine Roque on
the sand courts on The Promenade.

FIELD SET FOR EVIAN LONG BEACH INVITATIONAL
EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - The seedings for the 24-team Evian Long Beach
Invitational have been set for this weekend's event on The
Promenade in downtown Long Beach as the Coors Light Women's Pro
Beach Volleyball Tour introduces a new format for its 125th all-
time event.
The $40,000 Evian Long Beach Invitational is the 13th stop on the
1995 Coors Light Tour as the Women's Professional Volleyball
Association nears the completion of its ninth-season of operation
with three events remaining.
The Evian Long Beach Invitational returns to The Promenade in for
the third-straight season with the 24 teams competing in the
"first-ever" single-elimination tournament. In the past 124 Coors
Light Tour stops, 114 events have featured a double-elimination
format, six events have been a pool-play shootout, two a individual
pool-play event and one featured both pool and a double-elimination
format.
By using the single-elimination format, the top eight Coors Light
Tour teams will receive a first-round bye. Eight matches will be
played Friday starting at 10 a.m. (PDT) featuring seeds No. 9
through No. 24.
Second-round championship play continues at 9 a.m. Saturday with
eight teams advancing to Sunday's quarter-finals. Sunday's play
begins at 9 a.m. with the quarter-final winners playing at 1 p.m.
and 2 p.m. followed by the Evian Long Beach Invitational
championship match.

EVIAN'S MEET THE PROS ON PINE
Nine players competing in this weekend's Evian Long Beach
Invitational have been invited by four Pine Avenue restaurants in
downtown Long Beach to meet the public and sign autographs
following daily competition. Evian's Meeting the Pro on Pine
promotion will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. daily. Tiffany Anderson,
Wendy Fletcher, Lucy Han and Monica Oliver will be at the System M
Restaurant (213A Pine Ave.) Friday. Christine Schaefer and Gayle
Stammer will be at Andiamo In Citta (217 Pine) Saturday while Gail
Castro will be at mum's (144 Pine). Lisa Arce and Krista Blomquist
will be at Alegria (115 Pine) following Sunday's championship
match.
