MCPEAK/RENO CAPTURE BALLY TOTAL FITNESS NATIONALS
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. - Top-seeded Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno
used a four-point spurt at the end of the match to capture their
first "major" domestic title here Sunday in the $40,000 Bally Total
Fitness Nationals at The Pier.
McPeak and Reno used the rally to break an 11-11 tie to defeat
second-seeded Linda Hanley and Karolyn Kirby 15-11 to capture the
$9,400 first-place prize in the Coors Light Women's Pro Beach
Volleyball Tour event.
The win was also McPeak's first "major" Coors Light Grand Slam
title while Reno was capturing her second "major" title after
winning the 1992 Bally Total Fitness Nationals with Kirby.
The title match was tied eight times before McPeak and Reno
regained the lead with their 12th point with 100 seconds left in
the contest. Hanley and Kirby led 6-5 and 9-7 before McPeak and
Reno regained the lead at 11-10. Kirby's block at the net tied the
match at 11-all with two minutes, 11 seconds left.
The two wins extended the McPeak/Reno winning streak to 28-straight
oodd. Hanley and Kirby split $7,000 for finishing second while
Masakayan and Rock split $5,000 for third and Arce and Dodd split $3,400
for
fourth.
The Ninth Annual Bally Total Fitness Nationals featured "live"
coverage by CBS Sports of Sunday's championship match. Andrea
Joyce of New York and Maria Barnes of Manhattan Beach, Calif.,
provided the commentary.
Kirby and Masakayan won the first two "major" titles this season by
defeating McPeak and Reno in the Killer Loop U. S. Open June 11 in
Hermosa Beach, Calif., and the Bally Total Fitness Shootout July 2
at Newport, R. I.
Following the Bally Total Fitness Nationals, the Coors Light Tour
takes a month off before ending the season in Kauai, Hi. (Sept. 21-
23) for the Evian Best of the Beach II competition at the Kauai
Marriott and Beach Club at Kalapaki Beach. The event is the fourth
and final Coors Light Grand Slam event. The Coors Light Tour's top
players will also be competing in international events in Algarve,
Portugal (Aug. 23-27), San Juan, P. R. (Sept. 5-9), Bali, Indonesia
(Sept. 13-17) prior to the season-ending event in Hawaii. Here are

ARCE/DODD SCORE BIG IN BALLY TOTAL FITNESS NATIONALS
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. - Seventh-seeded Lisa Arce and Patty
Dodd won three of four matches here Saturday to earn an
unexpected place in the final four of the Bally Total Fitness
Nationals at The Pier.
Arce and Dodd, playing together for the first time in the nine-
year history of the Coors Light Women's Pro Beach Volleyball
Tour, earned an Olympic Crossing semi-final spot by defeating
eighth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Deb Richardson 15-3.
However, it was Arce and Dodd's 15-9 upset in their first match
Saturday over second-seeded Linda Hanley and Karolyn Kirby in
the championship quarter-finals that ignited the final four bid.
Following the 16-14 loss to third-seeded Liz Masakayan and Angela Rock in
the championship semi-finals, Arce and Dodd rebounded by downing Poppinga
and Richardson to advance to Sunday's first match against top-seeded
Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno at 8 a.m. (PDT).
In Sunday's other Olympic Crossing semi-finals, Hanley and Kirby had to
rally through the contender's bracket to earn a match against Masakayan
and Rock at 9 a.m.
Forty-two teams started play Friday morning with four teams left in the
field for Sunday's final four matches in the third of four "major" events
on the 1995 Coors Light Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
The $40,000 Bally Total Fitness Nationals is being played on five
constructed sand volleyball courts south of The Pier. The 11 a.m.
championship match is followed by the third-place contest at 12:15 p.m.

The two wins extended the McPeak/Reno winning streak to 26-straight on
both the Coors Light Tour and FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-
Series circuit.
McPeak and Reno have won the last six events they have played, including
Coors Light Tour stops in Old Orchard, Me., Portland, Ore. and Long Beach,
Calif.

UPSET HIGHLIGHTS OPENING ROUNDS OF BALLY TOTAL FITNESS NATIONALS
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. - Eleventh-seeded Jackie Campbell and Janice
Harrer scored Friday's only upset by defeating sixth-seeded Cammy
Ciarelli and Barbra Fontana Harris 12-11 in the Bally Total Fitness
Nationals here at The Pier.
Forty-two teams started play Friday morning withn 14 teams vying for the
final four spots in the 32-team main draw. The event is the third of
four
"major" events on the 1995 Coors Light Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.
The $40,000 Bally Total Fitness Nationals is being played on five
constructed
sand volleyball courts south of The Pier. Saturday's play begins at
8:30
a.m. (PDT) with contender's bracket matches. Four teams advance to
Sunday's semis at 8 and 9 a.m. The 11 a.m. championship match is
followed by the third-place contest at 12:15 p.m.

Fontana Harris served with 3.9 seconds on the time clock in an attempt to
tie the score, but Campbell and Harrer were able to get the side-out as
the rally lasted 8.9 seconds.
Campbell and Roach will face third-seeded Liz Masakayan and Angela Rock
in one of four championship bracket quarter-final matches Saturday.
Masakayan and Rock advanced with two wins Friday, including a 15-9 win
over 14th-seeded Kristi Atkinson and Pat Keller in the second-round.
In another close match Friday, eighth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Deb
Richardson defeated ninth-seeded Christine Schaefer and Gayle Stammer 18-
16. Schaefer and Stammer led 14-11 before Poppinga and Richardson tied
the score at 14-all.
The match featured nine lead changes and 12 ties as Poppinga and
Richardson scored the last three points of the match to advance to
Saturday's first quarter-final at 10:30 a.m. against top-seeded Holly
McPeak and Nancy Reno.
McPeak and Reno won both of their matches Friday, including a 15-5 win
over 16th-seeded Tiffany Anderson and Monique Oliver. The two wins
extended the McPeak/Reno winning streak to 24-straight on both the Coors
Light Tour and FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series circuit.
Second-seeded Linda Hanley and Karolyn Kirby, and fourth-seeded Gail
Castro and Lori Forsythe also won two matches Friday to advance to the
