PORTLAND, ORE. - After two events as the runnersups, top-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley regained the winning form here Sunday (Sept. 1) to win the $50,000 Jantzen Pro women's pro beach volleyball event at RiverPlace Square.
Fontana Harris and Hanley snapped a 20-match winning streak by second-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak by capturing a 15-12 win to snare the Fontana Harris/Hanley's fourth title of the 1996 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour season.
In the third-place match, fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop rallied from an 8-3 deficit to defeat third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock 15-10. Roque and Shupryt-Knoop shared $5,700 for third while Kirby and Rock split $4,100.
Olympians Fontana Harris and Hanley advanced to the championship semi-finals with a 15-10 victory over Kirby and Rock while Arce and McPeak scored a 15-5 win against Roque and Shupryt-Knoop.
Fontana Harris and Hanley, who finished fourth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, had dropped the past two Evian Tour finals to Arce and McPeak, including a 15-6 loss in New York (Aug. 11) and 13-12 in Huntington Beach, Calif. (Aug. 18).
Arce and McPeak renewed their partnership following the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games where McPeak finished fifth with Nancy Reno after being eliminated from the competition by Fontana Harris and Hanley. Arce and McPeak had won Evian Tour events last month in New York (the Evian Invitational) and Huntington Beach (the Evian National Championships), and an international event in Pusan, Korea.
The win was Fontana Harris' 12th of her pro beach career, including her ninth on the Evian Tour. Hanley now has 14 career beach crowns with eight being on the Evian Tour. As a team, Fontana Harris and Hanley have combined to win five pro titles. Here's Sunday's results (seed):

The Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour's final team event of the 1996 season is Sept. 13-15 when 12 teams compete in the $75,000 Best of the Beach III at Lihue, Kaua'i, Hawaii. The fourth and final "major" stop on the Evian Tour will be staged at Nawiliwili Park near Kalapaki Beach in Lihue. The Best of the Beach III features both pool and bracket play. There will be two pools in Best of the Beach III featuring four teams each during the opening day of play with 12 matches Sept. 13 starting at 10 a.m. (HST). The top four-seeded teams will receive a bye into bracket play and joint the top two teams from each pool in the "Elite Eight". PORTLAND, ORE. - Fourth-seeded Patty Dodd and Christine Schaefer rebounded from an opening loss here Saturday (Aug. 31) to score two wins in the $50,000 Jantzen Pro women's pro beach volleyball event at RiverPlace Square.
After being upset 15-12 by 13th-seeded Nancy Mason and Leanne Schuster, Dodd and Schaefer downed 15th-seeded Erin Deiters and Liz Pagano 15-4 and 12th-seeded Jackie Campbell and Linda Johnson 15-13 to advance to Sunday's final rounds of the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event.
The top three-seeded teams won two matches each to advance to Sunday's final rounds along with fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop, who advanced with a 15-10 win over Mason and Schuster.
Twelve teams advanced to Sunday's final matches starting at 8 a.m. with four contender's bracket matches followed by two championship bracket semi-finals at 9 a.m. Four teams advance to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals at 11:30 a.m. Sunday with the tournament finale set for 3 p.m. on the RiverPlace Square courts.
Top-seeded and Olympians Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley, who advanced to the championship semi-finals with a 15-13 win over eighth-seeded Krista Blomquist and Danalee Bragado, face Roque and Shupryt-Knoop.
Third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock challenge second-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak in the other championship semi-final match. Kirby and Rock advanced with a 15-4 win over sixth-seeded Karrie Poppinga and Deb Richardson while Arce and McPeak downed 10th-seeded Wendy Fletcher and Ali Wood 15-2.
Arce and McPeak, the youngest team to win an Evian Tour event together, have almost been unbeatable in August. The pair has won three events together this month enroute to a 21-1 match mark. Last weekend, the pair won a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship-Series event in Pusan, Korea.

Saturday proved to be a "heartbreak" for local legend Johnson, a former four-time All-American at Portland State and a member of the Oregon Sports Hall-of-Fame.
After opening with a 15-2 win over 21st-seeded Karen Fredericks and Suzanne Ziegler, Johnson and Campbell dropped a 16-14 decision to Roque and Shupryt-Knoop after serving for the match twice.
Against Dodd and Schaefer, Johnson and Campbell trailed 12-8 before closing the margin to 14-13 and had another two chances to tie the score before losing 15-13. EL SEGUNDO, CALIF. - For the second-straight season, the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour returns to Portland, Ore., for the Jantzen Pro Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
The $50,000 Jantzen Pro is Stop No. 14 as the players position themselves for the final "major" event on the 1996 Evian Tour schedule.
Following the Jantzen Pro, the Evian Tour stages its final "major" event in Kauai, Hawaii (Sept. 13-15) for the Best of the Beach III competition. Depending on the Portland entries, the teams with the top 12 combined point totals will earn a berth in the last of four "major" Evian Tour events.
The Jantzen Pro will be played on four newly-constructed sand volleyball courts at RiverPlace Square in downtown Portland.
Depending on the number of entries, a qualifying session will be held from 1-4 p.m. (PDT) Aug. 30 on the RiverPlace Square courts. Seedings for the second annual Jantzen Pro will be released Aug. 28 at 5 p.m.
Competition in the 28-team main draw will start at 9 a.m. Aug. 31 with 40 matches in three rounds of the championship bracket and three rounds of contender's bracket.
Twelve teams advance to Sept. 1's final matches starting at 8 a.m. with four contender's bracket matches followed by two championship bracket semi-finals at 9 a.m. Four teams advance to the Olympic Crossing semi-finals at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 1 with the tournament finale set for 3 p.m. on the RiverPlace Square courts.
Two-thousand (2,000) Jantzen Pro center court tickets will be sold for each day. Tickets are available at the Jantzen Store in Portland's Downtown Galleria Mall or at 40 Ticketmaster locations (503/224-4400). Daily center court tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under.
Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., will be taping the Jantzen Pro for distribution via Prime Network the week of Sept. 1. Drew Goodman of Denver, Colo., and Maria Barnes of Manhattan Beach, Calif., will provide the commentary.
Two-time world champion Karolyn Kirby and "Silver Bullet ace" leader Angela Rock will host a "free" Jantzen Instructional Clinic Aug. 30 at RiverPlace Square from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Only Kirby and Liz Masakayan have won more event titles (26) than the Kirby/Rock tandem, who captured the Long Beach Open last month for their 18th Evian Tour championship.
Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley, who finished fourth in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, are currently the top-seeded team on the Evian Tour. The pair has captured three events this season, including a 15-11 win over Janice Harrer and Gayle Stammer in the season's first "major" event (Evian U. S. Open) in Ocean City, Md. (June 16).
Lisa Arce and Olympian Holly McPeak captured the next two "major" title by defeating Fontana Harris and Hanley in the finals of the eight-team Evian Invitational in New York's Central Park (Aug. 11) and the 32-team Evian National Championships in Huntington Beach, Calif. (Aug. 18).

The Evian Tour has had six different winning tandems in the first 13 events. The campaign started with indoor events in Fairfax, Va. and New York. Outdoor stops have been in Deerfield Beach, Fla., Puerto Rico, Hermosa Beach, San Diego, Austin, Tex., Ocean City, Newport, Chicago, Long Beach, Calif., New York and Huntington Beach.
Kirby and Schaefer scored upset wins over McPeak and Reno (15-13) and Masakayan and Rock (15-4) to win the $21,000 first-place prize in the Fairfax, Va. indoor opener Feb. 3.
McPeak and Reno rebounded at the New York indoor event (Feb. 24) by capturing the record $31,500 first-place prize by downing Masakayan and Rock 15-13 in the finals.
With ABC Sports covering the outdoor opener in Deerfield Beach, McPeak and Reno posted six-straight wins to capture the first-place prize, including a 15-8 win over Masakayan and Rock in the Apr. 7 final.
Following two FIVB events in Brazil, the domestic competition resumed with McPeak and Arce defeating Rock and Dodd 15-10 to win the Coors Light Beach Volley '96 Apr. 28 in Puerto Rico.
Fontana Harris and Hanley captured their first domestic win together by scoring two upset wins in the Olympic Crossing rounds at the Evian Hermosa Beach Open, including a 12-11 decision over Kirby and Reno in the May 5 ABC televised finale.
Kirby and Reno avenged the Hermosa setback by capturing the San Diego Open (May 19) with a 6-0 match mark, including a 15-9 win over Fontana Harris and Hanley in the championship match. With McPeak and Reno renewing their partnership in the Evian Austin Open (May 31-June 2), the pair defeated Arce and Kirby in the Texas finale 15-7.
Fontana Harris and Hanley returned to the winner's circle with back-to-back titles in Ocean City and Newport. McPeak and Reno "tuned" up for the Olympics with a 15-11 championship win over Fontana Harris and Hanley in Chicago.
In a marathon finale in Newport, Fontana Harris and Hanley outlasted Kirby and Rock 22-20. The championship match was the highest-scoring title match in Evian Tour history along with tying the mark as the highest overall match in terms of total points.
While the tandems of McPeak/Reno (fifth in the Olympics), Fontana Harris/Hanley (fourth) and Castro/Richardson (ninth) were preparing for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Kirby and Rock defeated Arce and Dodd 15-11 to win the Long Beach Open.
Led by Kirby, six players are competing for the 10th-season on the Evian Tour. Kirby is the winningest player with 58 career titles and $411,874.13 in earnings. Other 10-season veterans are Jackie Campbell, Castro (three event titles, $194,331.13), Harrer (12 titles, $184,682.75), Roque (three titles, $223,492.21) and Stammer (one title).
