ARCE/MCPEAK WIN THIRD "MAJOR" AT BEST OF THE BEACH III

LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak captured their third-straight "major" championship on the 1996 Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour here Sunday (Sept. 15) by winning the Best of the Beach III title.

Seeded second in the 15th and final Evian Tour event of the 1996 season, Arce and McPeak upset top-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley 15-7 in the championship final to split the $15,000 first-place prize.

The win was the third in the last four Evian Tour events for Arce and McPeak, who also captured "major" titles in New York's Central Park and Huntington Beach, Calif., last month.

Arce and McPeak, who also won an Evian Tour event last April in Puerto Rico along with an international tournament last month in Pusan, Korea, advanced to the title match with a 15-8 win over fourth-seeded Patty Dodd and Christine Schaefer in the Olympic Crossing semi-finals.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who won four Evian Tour events this season, split $12,000 for second-place. The Fontana Harris/Hanley tandem, who placed fourth in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, advanced to the finals with a 15-8 win over third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock.

Kirby and Rock finished third in the Best of the Beach competition for the second-straight season by defeating Dodd and Schaefer 15- 12. The Kirby/Rock tandem split $9,000 for third while Dodd and Schaefer shared $6,750.

With her share of the first-place prize along with a $1,000 bonus for finishing third in the Coors Light "Silver Bullet" ace competition, McPeak finished the season with $88,025 in earnings to set a single-season money mark. Kirby earned $83,010 in 1994 to establish the previous best.

Rock won the "Silver Bullet" ace competition with a record 102 aces to break her previous Evian Tour best of 101 in 1992. Arce finished second with 73 aces to earn $3,000 while McPeak was third with 71.

The Best of the Beach III, the 15th stop on the 1996 Evian Tour, was hosted by Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, County of Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Economic Development Board and the Kalapaki Beach Resort Association (Sandra Tedder, 808/826-9343).

The Best of the Beach III competition featured three players with local ties, including Karrie Poppinga, Danalee Bragado and Janice Harrer.

Poppinga is a former University of Hawaii All-American with Bragado a 1989 graduate of Punahoe High School. Harrer was a winner of 12 Evian Tour events and was the tour's top defender in 1990.

Poppinga and Liz Masakayan finished fifth to split $5,625. Bragado finished seventh with Blomquist to share $4,500 while Harrer placed ninth with Valinda Hilleary to split $3,750.

SATURDAY RESULTS

TOP SEEDS ADVANCE AS EXPECTED IN BEST OF THE BEACH III

LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - The top two seeded teams advanced to the final four of the Best of the Beach III here Saturday (Sept. 14) with four other teams still battling for the last two spots in the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event.

Both top-seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley and second- seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak won two matches as expected Saturday to earn a spot in the Olympic Crossing final rounds at Nawiliwili Park near Kalapaki Beach.

Fontana Harris and Hanley, who finished fourth in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, advanced to the final rounds in the $75,000 Best of the Beach III with a 15-7 victory over fourth-seeded Patty Dodd and Christine Schaefer.

Arce and McPeak, who have won two of the past three Evian Tour events, downed third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock 15-10 to advance to the final four for the seventh time this season as a team.

Seventh-seeded Gail Castro and Gayle Stammer will challenge Kirby and Rock at 9 a.m. (HST) Sunday for the third spot in the final four with the winner facing Fontana Harris and Hanley at 11:30 a.m.

Dodd and Schaefer face sixth-seeded Liz Masakayan and Karrie Poppinga at 10 a.m. Sunday for the fourth and final spot in the Olympic Crossing rounds with the winner playing Arce and McPeak at 12:30 p.m.

Castro and Stammer eliminated fifth-seeded Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop 15-6 to advance to Sunday's final rounds. Masakayan and Poppinga ousted eighth-seeded Krista Blomquist and Danalee Bragado 15-8 to earn a spot in Sunday's competition.

ROQUE/SHUPRYT-KNOOP AVENGE LAST YEAR'S DISAPPOINTMENTS 10TH SEASON ENDS WITH BEST OF THE BEACH III IN KAUA'I

LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - What a difference a year makes for Elaine Roque and Dennie Shupryt-Knoop as the Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour team paced the field here Friday (Sept. 13) in the Best of the Beach III.

Roque and Shupryt-Knoop, the world's oldest pro beach volleyball tandem in terms of combined age (76 years), won all three of their matches Friday at Nawiliwili Park near Kalapaki Beach to advance to this weekend's eight-team bracket field.

Seeded fifth entering the $75,000 Beach of the Beach III, Roque and Shupryt-Knoop made up for their dismal showing here last season when they won only one of three qualifying matches in the opening qualifying rounds to be eliminated from bracket play.

Roque and Shupryt-Knoop face fourth-seeded Patty Dodd and Christine Schaefer in Saturday's first set of bracket matches while top- seeded Barbra Fontana Harris and Linda Hanley play seventh-seeded Gail Castro and Gayle Stammer at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In the second set of opening bracket matches Saturday, third-seeded Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock face eighth-seeded Krista Blomquist and Danalee Bragado while second-seeded Lisa Arce and Holly McPeak play sixth-seeded Liz Masakayan and Karrie Poppinga.

Pool B proved to be Friday's closest competition and Masakayan and Poppinga overcame a first match upset to win their final two matches, including a 15-13 come-from-behind win over Castro and Stammer.

Castro, who competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games along with McPeak, Fontana Harris and Hanley, and Stammer opened with two wins Friday before losing to Masakayan and Poppinga.

Janice Harrer and Valinda Hilleary, the 11th-seeded team, upset Masakayan and Poppinga 15-12 to open Friday's play. The Harrer/Hilleary duo overcame a 9-2 deficit to Castro and Stammer to lead 14-10. However, Castro and Stammer rallied to win 18-16 to clinch their spot in Saturday's bracket play.

LIHUE, KAUA'I, HI. - The Women's Professional Volleyball Association concludes its 10th-season of operation here this weekend with the $75,000 Best of the Beach III.

The Evian Women's Pro Beach Volleyball Tour returns to Hawaii's "Garden Island" for the second-straight season as play opens Friday (Sept. 13) for the final team event of the 1996 season.

The Best of the Beach III is the 15th stop on the 1996 Evian Tour and will be staged at Nawiliwili Park near Kalapaki Beach. Hosted by the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kalapaki Beach, the Best of the Beach III features three days of competition on two sand volleyball courts with 12 teams entered.

The County of Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Economic Development Board and the Kalapaki Beach Resort Association (Sandra Tedder, 808/826-9343) are co-hosting the event with the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club.

Honolulu native Danalee Bragado, and Hawaii residents Janice Harrer (Honolulu) and Karrie Poppinga (Mililani) will be the featured players when competition opens Friday.

Poppinga, a former University of Hawaii All-American, will team with Liz Masakayan as the sixth-seeded team. Bragado, a 1989 graduate of Punahoe High School, will be a part of the eight-seeded tandem with Krista Blomquist. Harrer, a winner of 12 Evian events and the tour's top defender in 1990, will be paired with Valinda Hilleary as the 11th-seeded team.

The Best of the Beach III features both pool and bracket play. There will be two pools of four teams each competing Friday with 12 matches Friday starting at 10 a.m. (HST). The top four-seeded teams will receive a bye into bracket play and join the top two tandems from each pool in the "Elite Eight".

Eight matches will be played Saturday (Sept. 14) starting at 10 a.m. with six teams advancing to Sunday's (Sept. 15) final six matches. Following two play-in matches at 9 a.m. Sunday, the Olympic Crossing semi-final matches will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 a.m.

The third-place match will be played at 2 p.m. followed by the championship match at 3 p.m. at Nawiliwili Park. The winning team will share the $15,000 first-place prize.

Echo Entertainment of Encino, Calif., will be taping the Best of the Beach III for distribution via Prime Network the week of Sept. 29. Drew Goodman of Denver, Colo., and Maria Barnes of Manhattan Beach, Calif., will provide the commentary.

The Evian Tour is staging its third event in the Islands, including the 1990 Evian Invitational in Honolulu, and the 1995 Best of the Beach II in Kaua'i. Olympians Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno defeated Olympian Barbra Fontana Harris and Cammy Ciarelli 15-7 in the 1995 title match.

Led by Kirby, six players are completing their 10th-season on the Evian Tour. Kirby is the winningest player with 58 career titles and $413,924.13 in earnings. Other 10-season veterans are Jackie Campbell, Gail Castro (three event titles, $195,118.63), Harrer (12 titles, $184,682.75), Elaine Roque (three titles, $226,342.21) and Gayle Stammer (one title).
