Rankings
Rankings will be used to determine the automatic entry of teams into the main draw of each tournament. A given team’s ranking points is simply the sum of the ranking points of the two teammates.
To determine the initial rankings for this season, we took each player’s best 8 finishes over the last 365 days using AVP, BVA and FIVB results (other than the men’s event at 2001 Clearwater and the men’s and women’s events at 2001 Oceanside and 2000 King/Queen of the Beach). We then converted these 8 finishes to points using the official FIVB point/scale system and divided this total by 8. This number (the sum of the 8 best finishes divided by 8) was used to determine a player’s ranking. If a player did not have 8 finishes, he/she received zero points for each missed event. In the event of a tie, we went back to the 9th or 10th best result over the last 365 days to break the tie.
To determine rankings going forward, we will be using a cumulative 365-day method that starts as of June 1, 2001, with the initial ranking counting as the first result. Going forward, only AVP tournament results will count towards the on-going ranking. Each result will simply be added to the initial ranking over the next 365 days. If a player elects to play in an FIVB event that directly conflicts with an AVP event and receives dispensation (which all players are automatically granted for 2001), then we will take the player’s average result over his/her last 4 domestic tournaments (but if the player does not have 4 domestic tournaments, we will use FIVB results) as the player’s result for the missed AVP tournament.
Here’s an example of how it works: If your best 8 finishes from playing events on the AVP, BVA and FIVB tours in the last 365 days totaled 400 points, your initial ranking would be based on a 50 point average (400 points divided by 8 events). If you then earn 90 points at Hermosa Beach, your ranking will be based on a cumulative total of 140 points (50 points for your initial ranking PLUS 90 points from Hermosa Beach). If you then earn 180 points at Huntington Beach, your ranking will be based on cumulative total of 230 points (50 plus 90 plus 180).
For simplicity purposes, the rankings include all players who have either signed contracts with the AVP and/or participated in one or more BVA or AVP events in the last 365 days. The seedings will only list players who have signed player contracts with the AVP.
Seedings
Seedings will be used to determine the seed of the teams that have been placed into the main draw of each tournament, whether by rank, wild card, or qualifiers. A given team’s seeding points is simply the sum of the seeding points of the two teammates.
To determine the initial seeding for this season, we will be taking each player’s best 4 finishes over the last 365 days using AVP, BVA and FIVB results (other than the men’s event at 2001 Clearwater and the men’s and women’s events at 2001 Oceanside and 2000 King/Queen of the Beach). In the event of a tie, we will go back as necessary (to the 5th, 6th, 7th, etc. best finishes) to break the tie. We will release the seedings next week.
Starting with Hermosa Beach results, the oldest of the best 4 finishes will be replaced by the 2001 AVP result. In other words, after the Hermosa Beach event, we will drop the oldest of the 4 best finishes and will include the Hermosa Beach result. Going forward, only AVP tournament results will count for purposes of determining seeding.
