DIVISION II WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

December 6, 2003

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif -- On their fourth trip to the NCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championship, University of North Alabama's Lions made it to the top, capturing the title Saturday night, 3-0, over the tournament's Cinderella team, Concordia-St. Paul, before a crowd of 347 in Coussoulis Arena at Cal State San Bernardino.

All-American Yana Ninova, the second leading kill artist in the nation, delivered 22 kills, giving her 80 in three matches to lead the Lions. Vanessa Ferretti added 12 kills. All-American setter Ashley Moffitt, the nation's leader in assists per game (14.5 per game) came through with 47 assists and her sister Amy had 13 digs at the libero position.

UNA prevailed 30-24, 30-28, 30-22 over the Golden Bears, who finished the season at 32-4 as the North Central Region champions and national finalist in their first-ever appearance in the NCAA post-season tournament. UNA finishes at 33-7.

Jill Kalvik led the Golden Bears with 10 points and five block assists. Mandy Hoarazdovsky and Joy Wubben each had seven kills while Horazdovsky led the team in digs with 16.

Ninova, Ashley and Amy Moffit and Myshara High of UNA were named to the all-tournament team along with Wubben, Tia Lindberg and Horazdovsky of Concordia-St. Paul, Kim Morohunfola, Kim Ford and Cristen Trent of semifinalist Cal State San Bernardino, Nicole Bayle of semifinalist Grand Valley State and Ania Ruiz of Tampa.

Coach Matt Peck, savoring his first national title in almost 20 years of collegiate coaching, said "We played great again tonight. I think that we played better each day of the tournament and had a different player step up in each match. Tonight it was Myshara High (nine kills, .571 hitting), and I don't think they were prepared to defend her."

Ninova, closing out her collegiate career on a high note, said, "I'm so proud of these girls. I'm grateful for my teammates and coaches and couldn't think of a better way to finish my four year career here."

Amy Moffitt, the junior libero, said, "I don't think that being champions has sunk in yet but I'm super excited that my final match with my sister (Ashley) ended this way."

Concordia-St. Paul Coach Brady Starkey, completing a successful rookie season as the Golden Bears head man, said, "We couldn't keep up tonight. Our offense was a little off and their libero was phenomenal. I think their setter did a great job of mixing it up."

Kalvik, one of two seniors on the Concordia team, said, "They did exactly what we knew they could do. We just didn't do a very good job of stopping them."

North Alabama, a team that ranks third nationally in kills per game, drilled home 54 of them Saturday night to 36 for Concordia. The team hit.309, well above its season average of .294 (7th best in the nation), and had more assists (50) than the Golden Bears (36).

Since becoming the coach at North Alabama in 1995, Peck has led the national champs to 312 wins compared to just 61 defeats.
