The 2016 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad (Jogos da XXXI Olimpíada), will be held in  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  from  5-21 August 2016, followed by the 2016 Paralympic Games from 7-18 September 2016.

Athletes: 96 (48 men, 48 women; 24 teams in each event)

A total of 24 teams in the men's and women's edition will compete for the gold medal in a competition spanning #  days from August # - #.

Beach volleyball was introduced to the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. It is one of the most popular events on the calendar, boasting full houses.

At Beijing in 2008, USA's Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser clinched men's gold by defeating Marcio Araujo and Fabio Luiz of Brazil while Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor made it a double for the US as they beat home duo Wang Jie and Tian Jia.

Volleyball was first introduced to the Olympics at the 1964 Games in Tokyo.

In Beijing Brazil's women claimed their first ever gold medal at the event with victory over USA in the final, while the American men reversed the result by beating the Brazilians in their final.
