He will join fellow Olympians Craig Buck, Dusty Dvorak and Paula Weishoff. Japanese coach Yasutaka Matsudaira and volleyball organizer Bill Baird will be enshrined too, the hall announced Tuesday.
Timmons, who starred for the University of Southern California, won gold medals with the U.S. Olympic team in 1984 and 1988 and took home a bronze in 1992.
His flamboyant hitting from both the front and back row helped make volleyball, which was long known as a participation sport, into a more popular Olympic and spectator sport.
"It was a sport that people thought of as a game to play until the hamburgers were done at the park, and we helped expose people to how explosive and exciting six-man, indoor volleyball can be at that level," he said.
Timmons and the other five will be enshrined Oct. 19 at the Holyoke-based hall, which has been undergoing a $420,000 expansion.
